The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released its preliminary Toxics Release Inventory (TRI). This data from 2016 will be reviewed and revised by October and later an analysis of the data will be released in January 2018. The TRI provides information to the public about what chemicals are used at facilities in their communities, any releases that have occurred, and how chemicals are managed, reused, recycled or disposed of. This information provides individuals and communities a basis for interacting with each other, with companies and trade organizations, and with government agencies. At this point the data is incomplete since some chemical users may not have reported yet, some are not required to report, and the reports may still be revised. The EPA website has interactive features to assist users in finding and understanding the information they may need.
