Human is to error, so they say. Any firm that deals with chemicals should have prevention measures to keep the workers safe. Accidents may occur and they may be major or minor. The cause of the accident can also be a major vulnerability or something small, thus nothing suspicious should be ignored. In case of a chemical spill, a certain procedure should be followed to avoid the damage extension or any danger that may become of a worker.

Among the major causes of accidents in a chemical-related facility is disorganization. Ensuring that everything is put in place is of the essence. The work area should be kept as clean as possible. The containers that contain various toxic chemicals should be labeled and stated if they are toxic. Each and every chemical should be clustered depending on its type, reaction rate, or whatever it is related to. (TSOKOU, 2019) Unnecessary behavior in the facility should also be avoided.

There are the obvious basic procedures that are posted on the walls of the facility, obtained from the training institution or they may come with the chemicals. The Safety Data Sheet should be understood before handling a chemical of any nature. The normally known toxic/highly hazardous chemicals should be handled with caution, with its precautions followed. (Guerin,2015) Eating and drinking in areas where the chemicals are should be avoided.

In case any new activities are to happen, communication about them should be made. People should be made aware of all the risks that come along with the activity stated. Pamphlets may also be issued to equip the concerned persons prior. All the containers should be closed whenever they are not being used. No risk should be underestimated at any point in time.

If there happens to be a chemical spill, the following procedure should be followed, depending on the facility. (Gam,2018)

  1. All persons around the area should be warned of the spill.
  2. Evacuation of the people should be executed.
  3. Identify the spilled element and determine the risk.
  4. Self-protection is required just in case the substance spilled is toxic.
  5. Identify the spill source and stop it.
  6. Contain the spill to avoid it spreading.
  7. Minimize the risk by neutralizing the substance (if applicable)
  8. Clean up the area of the spill.

Handling Chemicals require training and any issue that may be unknown should be understood first before implementation. Prevention is better than cure.
