The US Department of Health and Human Services Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) will be using statistics collected as part of hospital care for inpatients and also in Emergency Departments to measure the occurrence of Adverse Drug Events (ADE). The targeted classes of medication are anticoagulants, diabetes agents, and opioid analgesics. All are broadly used and have significant and measurable symptoms in the course of an adverse event. The tracking of ADE will be done in both public and private hospitals, as well as in the federal health systems. The 10% reduction is the hoped-for result of a federal ADE Action Plan that is being put into place in the federal health system (the Indian Health Service, Department of Defense, and Veterans Health Administration) and shared with health care providers outside the federal system. As part of the Action Plan research is planned to fill gaps in the knowledge required to prevent ADE.
