Employers and workers in construction and general industry are involved by the OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER). OSHA has launched a webpage at https://www.osha.gov/SLTC/emergencypreparedness/hazwoper/index.html to help comply with the worker safety provisions of HAZWOPER. Employers may choose to have their own workers respond to hazardous material releases and other dangerous events, or they may have a plan for workers to use some combination of escape routes and sheltering in place while outside agencies respond to emergencies. This standard applies to major events, not to incidental releases of small quantities of material that are dealt with by employees without immediate health risks, a need to evacuate or an actual emergency situation such as a fire or an explosion.
