No Injuries Reported After Chemical Leak Contained at Targa Dock 

A chemical leak took place on a barge owned by Kirby Inland Marine at Targa Resources dock, located at 12510 American Petroleum Road in Galena Park, Texas. 

A valve malfunction caused the release of butadiene, a colorless and highly flammable industrial gas. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies butadiene as a carcinogen. It is capable of creating irritation in the lungs through inhalation. Emergency crews took quick action, and no injuries or off-site impacts were reported. Specialized teams implemented containment measures to prevent further environmental contamination. Targa Resources has launched an internal investigation to determine the cause of the malfunction and implement additional safety protocols. 

The leak took place at Targa Resources dock on the Houston Ship Channel in Galena Park, Texas. The incident began around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. By 10 p.m. that night, the vapor release had stopped. The Houston Ship Channel reopened around 3 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. 

The incident resulted from a malfunctioning valve on the barge, leading to the unintended release of butadiene vapor into the air. 

 

Safety Measures Taken 

• Emergency response teams, including Port Houston EMS and the Coast Guard, responded to the site. 

• Authorities continuously monitored air quality and found no threat to the surrounding community. No shelter-in-place order was necessary. 

• The barge was moved to a secure location for detailed investigation. Normal operations resumed at the dock and along the ship channel.
